The pods and modular sector has grown into one of the liveliest corners of UK composites: meeting pods and acoustic booths for workplaces, glamping units and garden rooms for leisure, kiosks and enclosures for retail and infrastructure. The composite core is classic GRP: gelcoat application, spray and hand lamination, demoulding, trimming and drilling. The context is product manufacturing: repeat mouldings, consistent finish and a takt time to hold.
Downstream of the moulding shop sits assembly and fit out: bonding and sealing, glazing surrounds, acoustic linings and hardware, where composite literate fitters make the difference between a product that looks moulded and one that looks manufactured.
The workforce challenge is ramping cleanly. Order book growth arrives faster than skilled laminators can be hired, and cosmetic standards are unforgiving because gelcoat quality, edge finishing and panel fit are inspected by the least sympathetic inspector of all: the end customer.
